Famous Examples.
Wherever you see a red carpet, there will always be a pair of earrings on either side of a celebrity head! People have been adorning themselves throughout history, but it is the glamour of the film industry that has cemented the association with glamour, fame and luxury. A great example has to be Linda Fiorentino starring in “The Moderns,” where in one scene, one of her diamond earrings is thrown onto a the table of a café, for a glass of whiskey. Other examples include the seductive way that the character Mrs Robinson removes one of hers in the original movie of “The Graduate.” The continuation through to real life is seen with stars such as Barbara Stanwyck and Lana Turner, two actresses rarely scene in real life without wearing their dazzling display of diamonds. Celebrities adore the glamour that gemstones bring and the a diamond confirms the glamour of the celebrity. Even recent events such as the 66th Golden Globes saw Kate Winslet adorned with Platinum examples made by designer brand Chopard. The timeless, hard wearing nature and preciousness of Platinum earrings make it a luxurious but popular choice with celebrities.
Diamond Studs.
By far our most popular style of earring has to be diamond stud earrings. These are a true classic and form an essential part of the jewellery wardrobe. They consist of the setting onto which the peg is mounted. Onto this, a butterfly attachment or screw-back is fitted to secure the body onto the ear. Larger diamond earrings over 0.50cts we tend to supply as screw backs with a threaded peg, to ensure the earring stays firmly in the ear. After all, they are not something anybody wishes to lose! Diamond stud earrings can be created for a wide range of diamond shapes. By far the most popular are round studs. These are available as either three claw diamond studs or four claw designs or even six claw diamond stud earrings. Round brilliants are a true classic design like the round solitaire ring. We are happy to provide any choice of precious metal and we are often asked to advise on 18ct yellow gold examples. By making the back of the earring in 18ct yellow gold and the setting in white gold, the diamond will appear larger since the whiteness of the metal blends better with the white diamond. It is however dictated by personal preference. Our range of studs include princess cuts as well as emerald cut designs, to name but a few of the fancy shapes we can provide. One of the more decadent sizes has to be carat earrings in a range of diamond shapes. Although twice the price of a 1ct solitaire ring due to double the diamond weight, it is possible to vary the diamond clarity and maintain the whiteness to reduce the cost to an affordable level.
Drop Earrings
For evening wear or to just achieve that little extra movement in the ear, we provide a very selective range of drop designs , sometimes referred to as dangle earrings by some. Our diamond drop designs are only created using white diamonds of a high clarity to provide that extra bit of sparkle from the fire created in the diamond. After all, it is the cut, clarity and colour that in combination, create this brilliance. Because these styles hang from the ear, they are less hidden by the hair than studs that sit on the ear-lobe. They are an ideal design for an evening out and lend themselves very well to formal dress. Being extremely versatile, they can also be worn by day on a regular basis. We have a variety of designs which include cluster drops in pear shape designs, appearing from a distance like a single diamond due to the close proximity of the small compactly set diamonds. Other designs include our scatter drop styles with diamonds arranged over three strands that hang from the ear, or our snowflake drops where diamonds are set in a snowflake arrangement. Some of these styles can combine the drop with the stud, where a single diamond sits on the ear lobe, with an additional diamond hanging below it as a drop, all in the same piece. In such designs, it is possible to combine more than one diamond. Pear shape diamonds are perfect also, due to the natural tear shape of the stone suiting suspension from the ear lobe.
Anatomy of the Design.
To provide some useful information on the structure of the stud, it is necessary to provide a brief glossary on the components. First we have the post. This is literally the stalk that joins to the body of the earring. The can consist of small recesses which grip the push on back, of clutch. These are normally sprung to provide enough force to keep the stud from falling out of the ear. Alternatively, screw on backs provide added security for large diamond studs. The stud earring should aim to sit on the lobe of the ear without any attachment being visible. The objective is a minimal setting that allow the diamond to be seen rather than the metal around it. Certain designs such as rub-over earrings are elaborated by the metal surround which follows the outline of the stone. The part of the earring holding the diamond is referred to as the setting, available in a variety of styles. Claw settings are popular and the four claw ear stud is a classic timeless example popular as a bridal gift for the wedding day.
