"It is never easy in the case of a surprise, but by taking notice of her style and tastes, you will find the right engagement ring for her."

Consider her taste. Look to see what her existing jewellery is made of.  Does she prefer white gold or yellow gold.

When you pass a jewellery shop does she stop and point out a particular style?

Does she prefer simplicity or more intricate fancy designs?

What is her ring size?

The latter of these is not too difficult. Remember an engagement ring should be worn on the third finger of the left hand. If you are unsure of her ring size and you are choosing together, we will gladly send you one of our easy to use ring sizers. Please see our ring size section.

If this is a surprise, try to find one of her existing rings that she wears on the same finger. Try it on and make a note with a felt tip where it becomes snug. You can then use our ring sizer to find the measurement.

It is a fact that nearly all women adore diamonds and it is a perfect choice for an engagement ring. Making the right choice is important as the stone usually represents 75-90% of the overall cost of the ring. A diamond holds the eye and has become the best and first choice for engagement rings. It is emblematic of the permanence, stability and sincere afffection between two people. For some, the half carat diamond is te perfect size, but to others, the carat diamond ring is the ideal diamond weight, but much depends on budget as well as preference.

Engagement rings are made up of three main components. Firstly the shank or band, the shoulders of which meet the engagement ring setting, or head of the ring. The engagement ring setting is the part that holds the stone. It is essential that engagement ring settings are secure in order to protect the stones from daily wear and tear. There are many different styles of each component and it is the combination of these that forms the individual ring.

6 Claw engagement rings

Claw Set Engagement Rings

There are various types of claw setting. The most popular being the claw or prong setting. This is made up of individual claws which hold the stone(s) providing protection for it. Some of the simplest designs such as the tiffany engagement ring, show off the diamond due to the simplicity of the setting.

4 claws - very contemporary but requires sturdy claws, as one damaged claw could result in loss of the stone. Perfect for round brilliant diamonds, or fancy shape diamonds such as the princess cut. Simple four claw settings are perfect princess cut diamond engagement rings.
6 claws - such as the classic
tiffany setting where the six claws surround the diamond protecting the stone. This is a timeless classic which never looks outdated.
8 claws - very secure with many claws protecting the stone

Rub Over Set Engagement Rings

Rub over setting where the stone is surrounded by metal which follows the outline of the stone. The metal is pushed over the edge 'rubbed over' the stone providing a very secure setting. It is often referred to as a bezel setting, because the stone sits within the bezel. We have a range of rubbed over (bezel) settings for engagement rings available on the website or we can create your perfect ring for you. Anything is possible. If you know what you want, then we can make it!

Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that you will eventually be looking for wedding rings. If an engagement ring has a large setting, then it might be necessary to have a wedding ring made specially to fit alongside the engagement ring. Some designs of ring do take this into consideration, and it is often worth looking at these styles to make life easier in the future. We also have many designs that are wedding ring friendly.

Proposing with your Engagement Ring

Taking the leap with you!

Once you have found the perfect ring it time to think of how to propose to the lucky lady. We have compiled some imaginative and clever proposal ideas to inspire you!

Think of your first date, sometimes going back to those special places and incorporating those memories into your plans can make them more effective.

Cut out a small recess amongst the pages of a book of romantic poetry and insert the ring for her to find at a relevant page.

Getting the electric message board at your football ground when a big game is on to spell out "Will you marry me?" remember to add your ladies name in front so she knows it's for her! Get down on one knee.

Many people choose holidays or weekend breaks as the venue for their proposal. Be it a week in exotic Thailand or a weekend in Venice .

Make up a proposal treasure hunt. Produce cards with clues that lead her round the house or on a bigger scale round the local area leading her to a romantic location. A park, river etc.. Be there waiting for her with the engagement ring and propose!
