  • ART DECO ENGAGEMENT RINGS

An introduction.

Art Deco has long been an inspiration for jewellery and engagement rings, born out of the 1920's - 1930's movement, in which inspiration was taken from Egypt and the Far East and adopted by designers not only then, but now, with a revival of simplistic geometric designs, so reminiscent of this characteristic genre of design.

Art Deco Engagement Rings

Before discussing engagement rings of an Art Deco theme, we must begin by explain what we mean by the category. The term art deco, originated from the Paris Esposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925. The genre reflects a diverse assortment of eclectic designs, with influences taken from far and wide. From sources such as the Cubist painters, from Ancient Egypt (inspired by the discoveries of the time such as Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and the birth of Egyptomania. Motifs and themes from India, China and the Far East were combined with technological influences, combining strong shapes, with angular and cylindrical themes, overlapping and constructed like parts of a machine. The influences all reflected the time that this style originated, with travel, art, and advances in technology all contributing and influencing its evolution. Within the last few years there has been a call for more vintage engagement rings designed and inspired by designs of classic periods of design. Art Deco encompasses one such formative period of design.

In jewellery, and with engagement rings, precision matched gems, and exceptional stone setting techniques became a key feature, and elegant vertical lines, and bold, distinctive shapes gave a characteristic form to unique pieces. Strikingly bold designs, such as those of Lucien Hirtz, and lavish, one of commissions such as Cartier’s panther jewellery with pave set diamonds, worked into zoomorphic designs. Excellent design, was combined with stringent quality control, two traits we share at Serendipity Diamonds. Art Deco engagement rings encircle an astonishing array of designs, many of which combine other materials. It is the diamond set Art Deco engagement ring, however, that we focus on here, with one specific example to bring attention to, first of all, this being the Art Deco engagement ring design R3D023, which epitomizes the very feel and simplicity of Art Deco, with modern, precision stone setting techniques.

R3D023 - Art Deco Three Stone Engagement Ring

Instead of opting for the more modern, readily available Princess cut diamond, that is truly beautiful and finely faceted, we have opted for a central 0.50cts carré cut diamond that combines beautifully with the bordering baguette cut diamonds, carrying the step-cut theme across to the central diamond. Perfect for Art Deco engagement rings, carré cut, or step cut diamonds, like the Emerald cut diamond, demonstrate a more subtle beauty, with faceting lending itself to the linear form of the genre. Today we see a huge re-emergence of Art Deco and Vintage egagement rings where people reach to these elegant, timeless creations born out of this wonderful era in jewellery design for such inspirational and romantic jewellery that will be passed down to their loved ones for generations to come.
