Shaped Wedding Rings

The most common need for shaped wedding rings, arises out of a need for a specially shaped design that will fit around an existing ring, most frequently an engagement ring. Many pre-existing designs exist that are shaped at the design stage, when a particular style of engagement ring was first created. Other designs do not have a matched shaped wedding ring and require bespoke creation, also known as a custom design. At Serendipity Diamonds, we provide both, ensuring no matter which design of engagement ring you have, whether purchased from ourselves, or not, we can provide the perfect wedding ring for you. Fig 1. The image to the right, you will see that design R1D002 can now be provided with a shaped wedding ring, designed to fit against the ring, taking into account the twist design. Both rings sit extremely well on the finger, made even more comfortable by the court profile, that curves gently on both the outside and on the inside against the finger. Wedding rings such as this are available for each diamond carat weight in the range, from 0.30cts to over 1ct in weight. For more elaborate wedding rings, shaped diamond wedding rings can be made specifically to a client's specifications. Such designs as twist engagement rings, although many will sit next to a plain straight band, to achieve the perfect fit, a shaped wedding ring will make the ideal addition.

Why Do I Need a Shaped Wedding Ring?

With many engagement ring settings, there is a prominent area of the ring that will not allow a wedding band to sit neatly against the ring. By trying a straight edged wedding ring against your engagement ring, you will see if this is the case. Some modern designs of diamond engagement rings, take this into account at the design stage, and the setting is lifted away from the finger allowing room for the wedding band to sit flush alongside the engagement ring. Some examples of this style of ring can be seen below. Though our concern here is with shaped wedding rings, it is worth illustrating such "wedfit" or "wedding ring friendly", designs of wedding ring.

How are Shaped Wedding Rings Made?

We custom make such wedding rings in either of two ways. For most designs that require a contoured ring to be made to fit alongside a pre-existing engagement ring, the wedding ring is first of all carved from special jeweller' wax, a hard and carvable wax that enables a light and easy to carve model to be made initially. This is checked against the engagement ring, as it is made, and once completed, this is used to cast the final wedding ring. This comes from the cast very rough, and needs preparation before it can be hallmarked and polished. The later stages of making such a ring involve checking the ring against the engagement ring, with any minor adjustments being made that are necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

On the other side, the ring has been left with a straight edge as per the clients request. For this style of ring, a sufficient width is required and also a sufficient depth as with this example, since the client required baguette diamonds flush set within the ring. Where diamonds are set into the ring, enough depth has to be present to avoid the pavilion of the diamonds protruding from the back of the ring.

To gain some inspiration, or to just browse suitable styles of shaped wedding rings, it is necessary to view a variety of designs. Some of these are diamond set examples. They can be border and grain set, as seen below, or claw set, similar to the micro-pave style of setting. Alternatively, diamonds can be flush set within the ring, or even set within protruding bezels. Whether plain or diamond set, such shaped styles of wedding ring can be varied depending on the requirements of the client.

For any style of engagement ring, there is a complementary style of shaped wedding ring. Some of the most suitable, balanced designs work on the wedding ring having a similar depth and width to the band of the engagement ring. Consider too, the cut of diamond within the engagement ring. Round brilliant cut diamonds will be most suitably matched to other brilliant cuts, such as rounds, princess cuts, ovals etc, whereas step cut diamonds (Emerald cut, Carré  cut etc.) will be most suited to other step cut diamonds, such as Baguette cuts. Also consider the setting style. Flush settings are clean and simple, and for more texture and detail, mill-grain and pave settings are a good choice. Where the engagement ring possesses diamond shoulders, match the setting style. An engagement ring with channel set shoulders, will be best matched with a shaped wedding ring also having channel set shoulders. These can be extended to the same level ensuring continuity in design.

To create such designs for an existing engagement ring, we always require the engagement ring to work with. This is by far the best approach for ensuring a perfect matching ring. We recommend sending the ring to us by Royal Mail Special Delivery and if insurance is required, this can be arranged as part of the package with our own insurance broker, T. H. March. Upon receipt of the ring we can begin work, which normally takes approx. 2 weeks for completion. Shaped wedding rings created in this way will complement and enhance your existing engagement ring.
