Certified or Certificated Diamonds – What’s the Difference?

Terminology for Diamond Grading

There has always been some uncertainty surrounding the correct usage of both terms : certificated, and certified within the context of diamonds. Both references usually tend to be used to describe a diamond that has been submitted to a diamond grading laboratory to be graded under strict conditions, and the details documented on a diamond grading report.

Certified or Certificated? Is there a difference?

There is a difference between each term. Within diamond talk, both tend to refer to the same thing, but strictly speaking the following distinctions should be applied.

Certified – to describe a diamond that has been graded by a diamond grading laboratory. The specific details (usually carat weight, colour, clarity) of a diamond has been confirmed and verified.

Certificated – a diamond provided with a certificate. The certificate or diamond grading report documents details relating to that specific stone.

Both terms are used freely in reference to polished diamonds, rather than rough diamonds [not to be confused with the Kimberley Process and conflict diamonds]

Which is correct?

When it comes to correct jargon, both terms have a correct context. We generally talk about certified diamonds, but also comment that we are providing (for example) a GIA certificated diamond. Perhaps you have an opinion, or have your own thoughts? Feel free to share them below.
